Tesla Powershare Turns Model 3 and Model Y Into Home Backup Batteries for Over 2 Days

Tesla has expanded Powershare Home Backup, a feature previously available on Cybertruck, to newer Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. The technology allows energy stored in the vehicle’s battery to be sent back to the home during a power outage, helping extend Powerwall backup time for several days.

Model 3 and Model Y Can Now Serve as Home Backup Batteries
Tesla Energy announced on October 6, 2026, that Powershare Home Backup is now available for newer Model 3 and Model Y vehicles when used together with Powerwall 3.

When a power outage occurs, a compatible Tesla connected to the supported charging system can use energy from its high-voltage battery to help power the home. The vehicle works alongside Powerwall to extend the amount of time the home can remain powered during an outage.

Tesla states that compatible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles can provide approximately two days or more of additional home backup, depending on the vehicle variant, remaining battery level, and household energy consumption.

The Model 3 Standard and Model Y Standard can provide up to around two days of backup, while Premium and Performance variants may provide more than two days.

How Does Powershare Work?
For homes equipped with Powerwall 3, users need a Powershare-compatible Tesla together with Powerwall and either a Universal Wall Connector or Gen 3 Wall Connector, with the system properly configured.

When the grid goes down, the vehicle can automatically send energy back into the home as long as the battery remains above the minimum reserve level set by the owner and the vehicle stays connected to the Wall Connector.

A supported Powershare system can provide up to approximately 11.52 kW of continuous power, allowing it to support a range of household loads, including lighting, electrical outlets, and certain appliances, depending on the home’s electrical setup and overall energy demand.

Do All Model 3 and Model Y Vehicles Support Powershare?
Not yet. Tesla states that Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the United States and Puerto Rico on or after October 1, 2026 will support Powershare. Some vehicles produced earlier may also be compatible, but support must be checked individually.

Owners can verify compatibility through the vehicle touchscreen by going to:

Software > Additional Vehicle Information > Powershare Support

If the status shows “Enabled,” the vehicle supports Powershare.

Another Major Step in Tesla’s Energy Ecosystem
Bringing Powershare to the Model 3 and Model Y is significant because these are two of Tesla’s core vehicle models. It also brings Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) technology to a much broader group of Tesla owners.

Traditionally, an EV battery stores energy primarily for driving. With Powershare, that same large battery can also become an emergency energy source for the home during a power outage.

However, Tesla currently lists this expanded Model 3 and Model Y functionality primarily for the United States and Puerto Rico.

There has not yet been an official confirmation that Model 3 and Model Y vehicles sold in Thailand will support Powershare Home Backup. Tesla owners in Thailand will therefore need to wait for further updates from Tesla Thailand.
